KONE has revealed how it tests its lifts for high-rise buildings: in underground limestone mines in Finland! The laboratory is the deepest in the world, and stretches further than New York’s Chrysler Building, London’s Shard and the Eiffel Tower.

KONE uses the lab to do free-fall drop tests and conduct trials on ride comfort, aerodynamics, energy use and safety. B1M’s Fred Mills was invited to travel down the 362m elevator test shaft and experience the conditions under which KONE tests its lifts. You can watch his video here.
