LEIA announce publication of BS 7255:2023 Safe working on lifts - Code of practice
BS 7255:2023 is a code of practice which gives recommendations for owners and workers for safe working practices on lifts. BS 7255:2023 is seen as an authoritative document in the lift industry and by important stakeholders. So revision of this key standard for our industry is an important event (the last revision was published in 2012).
Key changes in this revision of BS 7255 include new or revised content including:
due to changes in the base standard for the design of new lifts BS EN 81-20 and to include example procedures for safe working on the car top and in the lift pit of a lift conforming to BS EN 81-20
references for the improvement of lifts to BS EN 81-80 and to include recommendation for the owner to carry out a safety survey of the lift using BS EN 81-80
references to industry guidance at Industry Qualifications (leia.co.uk) detailing qualifications in support of training and competence - https://lnkd.in/eZSQmSjK
training of people undertaking the release of passengers trapped (shut-in) a lift including where the release is by persons within the lift owners’ organisation;
removal of an unsafe lift from service;
returning a lift to service especially after changes have been made to it
the well-being of a person working with others
the importance of having up to date details for the lift and steps that might be required where these are not present.
The standard has been restructured and although much of the previous content has been retained, this has been a full revision so a thorough reading of the new standard is recommended.
LEIA members who have signed the LEIA Safety Charter have made a commitment to work to BS 7255 and other safety working standards such as BS 7801 and BS 9102. Click here for more details.
