A new report by EngineeringUK has found that the UK is experiencing a rising demand for engineers, and especially ‘green engineers’ as the country moves towards net zero.

The report, produced by Lightcast on behalf of EngineeringUK, examines the trends in job postings, recruitment and salaries and has found not only a steady increase in demand for engineers across all industries, but also the growing importance of ‘green skills’ to employers. In 2021, around 19% of jobs in the UK involved engineering and tech and that engineering roles accounted for 25% of all job postings in the UK. And when examining this recruitment, Lightcast found that vacancies for ‘green engineering’ roles increased by more than half (55%) in the last 5 years, and that 48% of job postings in 2021 mentioned a ‘green skill’.

These trends illustrate the growing importance of the engineering and technology sector, and its pivotal role in climate change action. Hilary Leevers, Chief Executive of EngineeringUK commented:

Report highlights the rising growth in green engineering roles

“Given the soaring demand for engineers across all sectors, it’s essential that the UK has a robust plan and funding in place to train the future workforce, bringing more young people from all backgrounds into engineering and technology, alongside reskilling the current workforce.

With the growth in green skills, and the central role engineers and technicians play in transitioning to a green economy and addressing climate change, ensuring that the sector has the skilled workforce needed to thrive is more urgent than ever.”

The report also features a snapshot of the most popular skills to employers across 13 engineering thematic groups which provides a great insight into recruitment trends.
