The East Hill Cliff Lift, a beloved icon of Hastings, has undergone a major refurbishment. The lift first opened in 1902 and is the steepest funicular railway in the country. The restoration efforts were crucial as the lift had been showing signs of deterioration, with worn tracks and misaligned components.

The extensive refurbishment project, managed by Lee Dean of LECS (UK) on behalf of Hastings Borough Council, encompassed a comprehensive overhaul to ensure the longevity and safety of this iconic funicular railway. The range of works undertaken included:

  1. Replacement Tracks

  2. Sleeper Repair

  3. Refurbished Chassis and Brake

  4. Replaced & Reinforced Lift Cabin

  5. New Brake Thruster and Linings

  6. Overhauled Motor, Gearbox, and Pulleys

  7. New Rope Brake & Ropes

  8. Main Steelwork Reinforcement

  9. Station Redecoration

Lee Dean, the project manager, expressed a personal connection to the endeavor, stating, "This project was close to my heart; I am originally from Hastings and worked on the lift as an apprentice lift engineer."

The successful completion of these extensive refurbishments has not only restored the East Hill Cliff Lift to its former glory but has also extended its lifespan for both visitors and the residents of Hastings to enjoy. The East Hill Cliff Lift stands as a testament to Hastings' rich heritage and commitment to preserving its historical landmarks.
