Lift installation issues delay Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel restoration
Restoration to the tunnel began in 2012 and was meant to be completed by 2015, but remains incomplete after issues caused by the pandemic and resulting supply chain issues. The project is being held up by the installation of two bespoke glass lifts, as the steel and glass needed for the doors have still not been delayed, four months after they were expected. British firm Lift Design Limited replaced Italian engineers Maspero Elevatori in 2021 after Covid travel restrictions severely hindered their ability to complete the project. The contractors hope the project will be completed “later in 2022”, once the lifts are installed and go through a certification and testing process. They are designed to carry up to six cyclists and their bikes, travelling on a steep incline down the historic escalator shaft, replacing the wooden escalators installed in 1951. This project is a clear illustration of the long-term problems manufacturers are now facing as a result of the pandemic.
